A Documentary overviewing Sweden’s Triumph over Tobacco Harm

Pouchforum would like to highlight that the documentary titled “How Sweden Quit Smoking,” is now available on YouTube and has surpassed 150 000 views with a good margin. The documentary begins by tracing the origins of Sweden’s work against tobacco harm and moves on to provide a detailed examination of the strategies and policies that Sweden adopted to combat smoking.

A unique aspect of Sweden’s harm reduction strategy has been allowing consumer access to viable alternatives such as snus and later nicotine pouches. Both smokeless and unanimously considered to be significantly less harmful. The documentary delves into the effective role that alternatives have played in reducing smoking rates, despite their somewhat controversial nature. By maintaining availability of less harmful alternatives, Sweden managed to transition many smokers away from cigarettes.

The cultural shift in public perception towards smoking is another crucial element explored in the documentary. Over the years, smoking went from being a widely accepted social norm to a frowned-upon behavior. This shift was largely driven by consumer demand following public health campaigns that highlighted the dangers of smoking and the benefits of quitting. In short, education and awareness seem to have created a demand for alternatives fulfilled by nicotine pouches and the more traditional snus. The film features interviews with Swedes who share their personal stories of switching to reduced risk products and the positive impact it had on their lives.

As advocates for harm reduction, NNPA and Pouchforum are happy to see the clear message supporting our efforts by health professionals and researchers in the documentary, including Dr. Karl Fagerström, creator of the renowned Fagerström Test for Cigarette Dependence, and Dr. Anders Milton, former Chair of the World Medical Association.

We hope this documentary will contribute to raising awareness of the potential for public health of reduced risk alternatives among people less familiar with the use of nicotine pouches.
